Basic Function:

Provide support for researchers synthesizing, developing, and characterizing advanced nanomaterial technologies.  Typical activities include making solutions and samples, operating material synthesis and processing equipment per laboratory operating procedures, performing analytical measurements as directed, and other duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Operate laboratory equipment and analytical equipment, carry out materials related experiments, and perform initial screening and analysis of data.
Manage analytical laboratories and develop necessary plans for equipment maintenance, operation, and repair.
Apply safety policies in the workplace, conduct safety inspections, and keep safety records.
Maintain up-to-date records of work progress, equipment utilization and scheduling, replacement parts, consumables, chemicals, solvents, and gas cylinders.
Assist in designing new installations or modifications to existing facilities.

Education and Experience:

B.S. in Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.  Working knowledge or experience with nanotechnology and/or analytical instrumentation a plus.
Strong analytical and creative problem-solving with sound working knowledge of laboratory and polymer instrumentation as well as microscopy/spectroscopy a plus.
Highly interactive interpersonal skills for effective communication with project team members and various staff (including engineers, scientists, technicians, vendors, etc).
Experience working in a polymer, wet chemistry, and/or analytical laboratory environment.
The successful candidate will have excellent journaling, verbal and written communication skills to successfully follow instructions outlined in experimental test plans, request clarification from the project manager, and work equally well independently and as part of a larger team.
Self-motivation and a strong attention to detail are required to efficiently complete tasks outlined in experimental test plans on schedule.
Familiarity with laboratory documentation procedures and quality assurance concepts.
Ability to prioritize responsibilities and handle multiple duties/projects simultaneously.
Creative ability to solve problems that arise without compromising data quality.
Ability to use Excel and Word to prepare graphs and tables for reports.  A basic understanding of statistics is a plus.
Aptitude with tools and mechanical devices. Some projects will require physical effort (e.g., working from a 15 foot ladder or carrying 25 lbs of equipment).
